MyImgur: desktop uploader for Imgur.com image hosting service

Posted in : Image Hosting

(added 23 days ago)

Imgur is one of the most popular image hosting sites on the Internet thanks to its ease of use and probably even more important than that the backing of Reddit users who seem to use it almost exclusively for all their picture uploads. Each day, nearly a million new images get uploaded to the site with image views reaching a billion views per day. One of the great features of Imgur is that you can upload images without the need for an account. Just select to upload images from your own computer or a website and you are done and got your image hosted.

MyImgur is a desktop uploader for the service that supports guest uploads as well as user accounts that you can configure in the program. You can just start the portable version of the program or install it on your PC. The easiest way to upload images is to simply drag and drop them in the program interface.  If you prefer to use the interface, click on the open button in the main program window and pick the pictures that you want to upload to the service.

The program displays the image you have uploaded last in the program window and keeps track of all the other uploads as well. To access them simply click on the upload history button. You have multiple options once an image has been uploaded to the hosting service. You can open it on the website, copy it in various formats for easy pasting on the web or other channels, or delete it if you made an error.

If you sign in to an account you get additional options that include saving images to albums, a feature that free users can't make use of. The program furthermore keeps track of your upload limit which is especially useful for users who are not logged in as they only get 50 uploads at a time before they need to wait before the slots are reset. MyImgur indicates when this is going to happen though so that you know exactly when you can start uploading new images.

The application can also be used to capture the full screen or part of it, and upload the resulting screenshot directly to Imgur.com.

Before you start to upload pictures to Imgur using the program, you may want to open the preferences first to make a couple of modifications here or at least check to make sure everything is set correctly.  You can among other things configure the program to automatically resize images before upload, log in here to Imgur, change the automatic name of captured images, set keyboard shortcuts and configure several miscellaneous options like the automatic copying of image links to the clipboard after uploads.

Web Hosting Reviews Rates iPage at the Top for Stopping the Recent WordPress Attacks

Posted in : Gossips, Web Hosting

(added 25 days ago)

Web Hosting Reviews, an Australian web hosting comparison website that features in-depth information about various web hosting services, recently announced that iPage is at the top of their rankings. The founders of the website have been extremely impressed with iPage’s ability to stop the recent attacks on certain sites by WordPress hackers and their botnet.

As an article on the Australian web hosting website explained, recently, a significant number of WordPress sites have been negatively impacted by a huge botnet. The insidious hackers have used virtual brute force tactics to target computers with weak passwords and generic user names. Unfortunately, most computer owners were completely unaware that their machines were affected by the botnet.

Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress, did what he could to address these attacks by offering WordPress users very specific and helpful advice on changing usernames and passwords. As he suggested, those who have “admin” as their user name should change it to something that is hard to guess, and passwords should be altered to something that includes numbers and upper and lower case letters. Next, Mullenweg suggested, people should upgrade WordPress to the latest version and then—for those who are using a WordPress hosted blog on WP.com—they should turn on two-factor authentication.

Despite Mullenweg’s in-depth advice, the hackers continued to attempt to take down servers. As the article on Web Hosting Reviews noted, this is when iPage really began to shine. When the first attacks started on April 11, 2013, iPage went to work blocking all of the access to the /wp-login.php page, which was the portion of the WordPress sites that was being attacked. Next, iPage created a secure firewall and banned IP addresses that made multiple login attempts.

“By Thursday the network infrastructure team made an almost permanent solution,” the article noted, adding that by looking at the data in the logs, iPage found a footprint in the way the botnet was accessing WordPress.

“It was different to how a normal user accesses their website. A new change to block out this unusual pattern was rolled out to the server and saw hundreds of hits per second, drop to almost none.”

Because of the way iPage responded promptly to the recent WordPress hacking incidents, Web Hosting Reviews now has it ranked in the number one spot for security. The founders of the website were extremely impressed by the way iPage worked diligently to help people, and find a solution as quickly as possible.

Hosting and Domain Names: The Two Things That Make Your Website Work

Posted in : Gossips, Web Hosting

(added 26 days ago)

Websites are complicated beasts, but put simply, there are only two very important systems that make it work. The first is hosting, and the second is your domain name. When having a website made, your web designer is going to need both, so let’s talk about them.

Hosting
Hosting is essentially storage space on a computer that is connected to the web. This special computer is usually referred to as a server, or web server. The host is where all of your website documents are stored, including HTML and CSS files, images, videos, as well as scripts and software that make your website work. When you have hosting service, you are paying for a portion of a server’s processing power and storage space.

As I said before, this server is connected to the web. It has a very special unique identifier called an “IP address”. (Fun fact: IP means ‘internet protocol’) An IP address is how that computer can be found on a network (such as the internet). Here’s the thing: IP addresses are notoriously difficult to remember. They look like this: 192.168.0.255.

Domain Names to the Rescue!
A domain name is the nice, easy to remember name (like google.com) that you type into a web browser. You can purchase a domain name through a company called a “domain name registrar”. Some of the most well-known registrars are GoDaddy and Network Solutions.

Domain names are a crucial component of the “DNS” or “Domain Name System”. When you type a domain name into your browser, you are asking your web browser to connect you to the website’s server so you can access the site. Say you want to access google.com. Here’s how it plays out:

Your browser asks the DNS (domain name system) where the google.com server is located on the internet
The DNS says google.com resides at a certain IP address
Your web browser then goes to that IP address, and says “Show me google.com”The host then serves the files to your browser, and you can then see the Google website Both of these systems are how websites are made visible on the web, and both are essential for your website to work properly (with few exceptions).

What does this mean for you?
As a business owner looking at getting a website set up, or having one redesigned, you will need to provide your web designer with access to both systems. In many cases, business owners choose to get their domain names and hosting service from the same company (Places like GoDaddy, 1&1, and Network Solutions), but it is also very common to get hosting and domain names at separate places. I, for example, prefer to purchase domain names at GoDaddy, but my sites are all hosted elsewhere.

As your web designer is working on your website, they’ll need to upload new files to your host, then, when the website is all done, they’ll need to ‘point’ your domain name to the website’s new location.

A Huge Tip:
Your domain name is as important to your business as your front door. It’s your identity online. As such, you should ALWAYS make sure you have ownership of it and have access to it’s administration. You don’t necessarily need to deal with it yourself, but you should absolutely have possession and control of it.

In some cases, web designers will set this all up for you, which is generally fine, as long as you have access to it anytime (like if you decide to redesign your site with a different web designer). You should always make sure that you own the domain name (as opposed to your designer), and you should always be the “Administrative Contact” in the domain’s “whois” data.

In conclusion:
If you purchase these services on your own, always keep the registration info in a safe place. If your web designer does it all for you, make sure you get access to the host and get access to the domain name registrar. You’ll then always have access to the two systems that make your website work!

Use Cloud Hosting to Grow Your Website

Posted in : Gossips, Web Hosting

(added a month ago!)

In today’s world, your website should work. Plain and simple, it should be accessible at all hours of the day, and should load quicker than the time you need to even think about it. This combination of reliability, speed and durability can be easily achieved with a little bit of help from good quality cloud hosting. Cloud computing isn’t exactly new, and it is estimated that around 80% of all businesses are using some form of it, although not everyone knows that they are. However, what is unclear is how many websites are still stuck on using traditional web hosting. Whilst many businesses may well be taking advantage of cloud storage, the hosting part of their website may not be so advanced.

Short Explanation on Cloud Hosting
The key to understanding cloud web hosting is the fact that clustered servers are making use of virtual resources from other interconnected servers. In contrast to more traditional web hosting where data is rendered from one dedicated physical server located in your office, your website’s resources will be spread over a number of servers instead.

As a result of the way it works, one of the biggest advantages is the scalability of the technology. This means that the right amount of bandwidth is always allocated to your site, never too much or too little. Should there be a need for more resource, it is provided and then dispersed when finished with. For the end users, there is no breakup in the service, so if more users come to your site, more resource gets allocated and they all enjoy the same seamless experience.

The end result is that website owners only pay for whatever they use. This is ideal for small businesses that have tighter budgets and may only see huge traffic during isolated peak periods. They would be able to accommodate the extra traffic as and when needed, whilst returning back to their usual bandwidth for the rest of the time.

Why is it Essential?
Other than efficient billing, there are a number of other benefits to cloud hosting. Although traditional shared hosting can be incredibly low cost in comparison to private cloud hosting, it’s also infinitely more restrictive to growth. Any website that is serious about growing quickly will need to seriously consider alternatives. Cloud hosting can do that.

As explained in the scenario above, you’ll only end up paying for what you use. This method of “pay-as-you-grow” allows for a website to gain additional users – and conversions – before spending money on the hosting. Essentially, you only spending money that you can afford to, provided that your additional conversions can cover that cost, of course.

Smaller websites can also rest assured that all the technology will be handled by professionals elsewhere. There’s usually no need for any further outlay when it comes to support and fixing problems. In addition to this, updates will usually happen automatically, without you knowing.

What to do next?
So now that you’re keen on the idea of using cloud hosting to grow your website, it is vital that you choose your vendor carefully. There are loads of options to choose from, and a quick search around for some of the best vendors will lead you to many brands.

As you can see, there are plenty of options. For anybody with a mind of growing, I would plump for Rackspace cloud hosting. If you’re finding that your site has reached a plateau and you’re looking to go to the next level, this is perfect. You’ll need some technical expertise to move your domain over, but once it’s done, you’ll get access to their renowned customer support, and true “pay-as-you-go” usage. Depending on the state of your website, you could have world-class hosting at a very low cost. Of course, this isn’t the only solution. Many other hosting companies will be able to perform the same basic job, but you might find that they will be somewhat more lacking on the support side. If you have little or no IT resource, you’ll probably find Rackspace’s support one of the biggest draws.

I would encourage anybody who is looking to improve their website to seriously consider moving away from any traditional or shared hosting that they may be using. Cloud hosting will, in the long run, prove to be more flexible and cost efficient for you, meaning that you can focus on growing your audience rather than worrying about whether or not you website can handle the extra traffic.

WebHostingGuard Warns Against Complacency Shown While Purchasing a Web Hosting Package

Posted in : Gossips, Web Hosting

(added a month ago!)

WebHostingGuard.com warns business entrepreneurs from showing any kind of lackluster approach when buying a web hosting plan. The hosting package should be bought keeping the long-term business objective in mind. The hosting services should complement the present and future business strategies.

The site talks about some of the common mistakes to be avoided. In most of the cases, a web hosting package is bought considering the immediate future requirements. It serves the purpose, but only for a limited period of time.

Shaun Derry, the official spokesperson, discussed about finding the right balance: A web hosting plan should have all the basic features. The best technique is to read reviews and gather information on must-have features. Every business entity is different and requires certain features to run a business website successfully.

“The best practice is to associate with one single web hosting company than changing it year after year. It does not help the cause to change hosting companies one after another”, said Mr. Derry. WebHostingGuard.com reviews the top web hosting companies 2013. The site ranks these brands keeping the performance and features offered.

Is Free Web Hosting Right for You?

Posted in : Free Hosting

(added few months ago!)

When you started your first web site or blog you probably spent a lot of time thinking about where you were going to host your site, the domain you would buy and probably even compared a bunch of hosts based on their pricing.

If you did this several years back you may also remember the pricing structure was likely much higher than they are today. With the massive competition in the web hosting space, costs are getting lower and lower every month. It’s actually gotten to the point where some of the best hosting and site design companies online offer their services for free! Blogging.org recently came out with a killer infographic on the top 25 free hosting companies in the hosting space today.

The top 10 names on the list, from over 40,000 votes are as follows.
Wix.com
Weebly.com
000WebHost.com
Yola.com
EDUBlogs.com
FreeHostia.com
Webs.com
5GBFree.com
Jimdo.com
FreeHosting.com

Of the names listed above, Wix and Weebly probably stand out as the ones that are most familiar to you.
In another recent case study, it was noted that Wix is spending over $25,000 every day in ppc advertising to acquire new customers on their site.

How the heck could a company spend $25k a day to offer free hosting you ask? Free hosting companies only need a small percentage of their users to actually upgrade to their premium and paid hosting services to actually turn a quick profit over time.

While this sounds great for the hosting company, the average internet person also benefits, as it’s extremely easy to create great looking web sites and get setup with a free subdomain off their hosting platform.

This is a great solution for anyone who is starting their first site and just wants to get something live without the need to learn programing or deal with every daysite issues. Speaking of creating web sites… let’s take a look at a few more stats that were provided from the Blogging.org free hosting case study.
- How many active websites are registered as of 2013?

Estimated 726 Million Active Websites on the web to date
- How many domains are registered as of 2013?
243 million domain names registered
- How many website pages are on the internet?

- How many websites are created every day?
